Quick-Start Mechanism -  04 Jan 2000

Well, here it is, Y2k has finally arrived. Raise your hand if you were disappointed when Friday's parties turned out to be no more exciting than last New Year's Eve... I see lots of hands. Mine is not among them. This year the CBTR staff played Nintendo games and watched cartoons to celebrate. We failed to participate in the time-honored tradition of getting drunk and puking on each other. Despite that, we had fun, and still made lots of noise when the clock struck midnight, though no more than we did last year.

Now, raise your hand if you were disappointed by the lack of carnage compared to last year... That's right, not nearly as many casualties as some predicted, and when I returned to the office yesterday, not much had gone wrong. The computers all still worked, the conference phone still didn't, and the alien presence that we detected was rather docile.

The three zeros on my 'DragonballZ' wall calendar are quite the novelty. I will try my hardest to make this year better than the last, and then to make 2001 even better than that. Some day your grandchildren might ask you, "What were you doing with your life around the turn of the millennium?" For the next couple of years, we should all be working on having a good answer.
